Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Aberdare National Park
Morning departure from Nairobi, driving north to the Aberdare Mountains. The Aberdares are an ancient volcanic range cloaked in dense rainforest and bamboo, rising to moorland at higher elevations.
Arrive at your tree lodge—built overlooking a waterhole and salt lick that attracts wildlife throughout day and night. Lunch upon arrival.
Afternoon watching the waterhole from the lodge’s viewing decks. Elephants, buffaloes, bushbuck, and warthogs visit regularly, sometimes joined by the elusive giant forest hog or bongo. Hyenas and leopards occasionally appear at night.
Dinner and overnight at the tree lodge—night viewing often continues into the small hours as floodlights illuminate visiting wildlife.
Day 2: Aberdare – Mount Kenya
Morning game drive through the Aberdare forest (if departing from a lodge that offers this). Look for black rhinos (present but rarely seen), elephants, and diverse birdlife.
After breakfast, drive to Mount Kenya (approximately 2 hours). The landscape transitions from dense forest to the more open terrain around Africa’s second-highest peak.
Afternoon nature walk or game drive on the mountain’s lower slopes. The montane forest zone supports elephants, buffaloes, colobus monkeys, and over 130 bird species.
Dinner and overnight at your Mount Kenya lodge with spectacular mountain views.
Day 3: Mount Kenya Exploration
Full day exploring Mount Kenya National Park. Morning drive through different forest zones—bamboo, podocarpus, and hagenia woodland. The scenery is stunning, with glimpses of the snow-capped peaks above.
Mid-morning guided walk to appreciate the forest environment. Look for Sykes’ monkeys, colobus, and the rich birdlife. Endemic plants and orchids add color to the forest understory.
Afternoon at leisure—fishing, horseback riding, or relaxation at the lodge. Evening game drive as temperatures drop and animals become active.
Dinner and overnight at Mount Kenya.
Day 4: Mount Kenya – Nairobi
Morning activity based on preference—final game drive, nature walk, or fishing. Return to the lodge for breakfast.
Check out and drive to Nairobi, arriving by early afternoon. En route, stop at local markets if interested in fresh produce or crafts.
