Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Meru National Park
Depart Nairobi early morning and drive northeast towards Meru National Park (approximately 5-6 hours via Embu). The route passes through the agricultural heartland of Kenya with views of Mount Kenya.
Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch. Meru’s lodges are set along rivers or overlooking plains, providing excellent wildlife viewing from your accommodation.
Afternoon game drive exploring Meru’s diverse habitats. Thirteen rivers cross the park, creating a mosaic of palm forests, riverine woodland, and open grassland. Elephants, buffaloes, lions, and leopards are all present, along with lesser kudu, hartebeest, and other antelope.
Visit Elsa’s kopje—the area where Joy and George Adamson released Elsa the lioness, inspiring the book and film ‘Born Free’.
Dinner and overnight at your Meru lodge.
Day 2: Full Day in Meru
Morning and afternoon game drives exploring different areas of the park. Meru’s varied terrain supports diverse wildlife—look for rhinos (both black and white have been reintroduced), leopards in riverine forest, and lions on the plains.
The Tana River forms the park’s southern boundary, attracting hippos and crocodiles. Birdlife is exceptional with over 400 species recorded.
Mid-day relaxation at the lodge. Optional nature walk along the river (where permitted).
Meru’s uncrowded nature means you may have wildlife sightings entirely to yourself—a rare luxury in popular parks.
Dinner and overnight in Meru.
Day 3: Meru – Nairobi
Morning game drive for final wildlife encounters. The early hours often bring predator activity and the best light for photography.
Return to the lodge for breakfast and check out. Drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.
