Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Mount Kenya
Depart Nairobi and drive north through the central highlands (approximately 3-4 hours). The road passes through fertile agricultural land and small market towns.
Arrive at your lodge on the slopes of Mount Kenya—lodges here offer stunning views of the peak’s glaciated summits (weather permitting). Lunch with mountain views.
Afternoon drive or walk through the montane forest zone. Mount Kenya’s forests shelter elephants, buffaloes, giant forest hogs, bushbuck, and the elusive bongo antelope (rarely seen). Birdlife is exceptional—look for Hartlaub’s turaco, silvery-cheeked hornbill, and numerous sunbirds.
Dinner and overnight at your Mount Kenya lodge.
Day 2: Mount Kenya Exploration
Morning game drive through the national park. The terrain varies from dense bamboo forest to open moorland depending on altitude. Elephants and buffaloes often emerge from the forest edge at dawn.
Mid-morning guided nature walk to appreciate the forest’s smaller wonders—orchids, lichens, medicinal plants, and the diverse birdlife. The air is fresh and cool, a refreshing change from savannah safaris.
Afternoon at leisure. Options include trout fishing in well-stocked streams (equipment often provided), horseback riding, or simply relaxing with views of the mountain.
Evening game drive as animals emerge for dusk activity.
Dinner and overnight at Mount Kenya.
Day 3: Mount Kenya – Nairobi
Early morning walk or drive for final wildlife encounters. The forest is especially atmospheric with mist rising through the trees.
Breakfast at the lodge with farewell views of the mountain. Check out and drive back to Nairobi, arriving by early afternoon.
