Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi/Mombasa – Tsavo East
Morning departure from either Nairobi (approximately 5 hours) or Mombasa (approximately 3 hours) and drive to Tsavo East National Park. The park’s vast scale becomes apparent as you enter through one of the main gates.
Arrive at your lodge overlooking a waterhole where wildlife comes to drink throughout the day. Lunch and time to settle in.
Afternoon game drive along the Galana River—Tsavo East’s lifeline. The river attracts large numbers of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and countless birds. Tsavo’s elephants are famous for their red appearance, caused by dust-bathing in the park’s iron-rich laterite soil.
Dinner and overnight at your Tsavo lodge.
Day 2: Full Day Tsavo East Exploration
Early morning game drive when animals are most active. Tsavo East’s flat, open terrain makes spotting wildlife straightforward—scan the horizon for elephants, giraffes, zebras, and antelope.
Visit Lugard Falls, where the Galana River is forced through sculpted rock channels creating a series of rapids. The colored rocks and dramatic setting make for excellent photography.
Picnic lunch in the bush before continuing to the Yatta Plateau—at 300 kilometers, it’s the world’s longest lava flow. The escarpment creates a distinctive landmark visible across the park.
Afternoon drive searching for lions and cheetahs. Tsavo East’s lion population is significant, and the open savannah provides good opportunities for sightings.
Dinner and overnight in Tsavo East.
Day 3: Tsavo East – Departure
Final morning game drive as the sun rises over the savannah. Look for any species you may have missed and enjoy last encounters with Tsavo’s wildlife.
Return to the lodge for breakfast and check out. Drive to Nairobi or Mombasa for your onward journey. Those heading to Mombasa can arrive in time for afternoon beach activities.
