Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi/Mombasa – Tsavo West
Depart from Nairobi or Mombasa and drive to Tsavo West National Park. Unlike its eastern counterpart, Tsavo West features hills, mountains, and diverse vegetation created by volcanic activity.
Arrive at your lodge—many Tsavo West accommodations occupy spectacular settings with views over watering holes or the Chyulu Hills.
Afternoon game drive exploring the park’s northern sector. The varied terrain means diverse wildlife habitats supporting elephants, buffaloes, lions, and numerous antelope species.
Dinner and overnight in Tsavo West.
Day 2: Mzima Springs & Wildlife
Morning visit to Mzima Springs—a natural wonder where 220 million liters of crystal-clear water emerge daily from volcanic rock filtration. Hippos and crocodiles live in these waters, viewable from an underwater observation chamber. Fish, including barbel and tilapia, swirl around the viewing windows.
Continue with a game drive through the Lake Jipe area, watching for the diverse birdlife that thrives in Tsavo West’s varied habitats.
Afternoon exploring the Ngulia Hills—a known leopard stronghold and rhino sanctuary. The terrain is rugged and scenic, with rock outcrops providing perfect leopard habitat.
Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 3: Shetani Lava & Exploration
Morning drive to the Shetani Lava Flows—meaning “devil” in Swahili, named by local people who witnessed the eruption approximately 500 years ago. Walk on the stark black volcanic rock and witness how vegetation is slowly reclaiming the land.
Nearby, explore Shetani Caves—lava tubes created during the volcanic activity (if accessible).
Afternoon game drive through different park sectors. Tsavo West’s scenery constantly changes—from woodland to grassland, rocky outcrops to river valleys.
Sunset views over the park before dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Tsavo West – Departure
Morning game drive for final wildlife sightings. Tsavo West often saves surprises for last—perhaps a leopard in a tree or elephants bathing at a waterhole.
Breakfast at the lodge before check out. Drive to Nairobi or Mombasa for your onward journey, or continue to Tsavo East or the coast for an extended safari.
